The public has until April 29 to weigh in on a draft document by the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach that looks at the feasibility of new and emerging cargo-handling equipment technology.  The ports extended the deadline to April 29 to gather more feedback on the draft, which further examines the original 2018 assessment and looks into the “current state of technology, operational characteristics, economic considerations, infrastructure availability and commercial readiness relating to cleaner cargo-handling equipment,” according to the ports.  The draft is part of larger efforts by the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to reduce…

Port of Long Beach Has Busiest March for Cargo Volumes 

The Port of Long Beach recorded its busiest March ever for cargo volumes, according to data released Thursday, April 14.  Long Beach handled 863,156 TEUs during the month, a 2.7% uptick from March 2021. Imports rose 4.7% to 427,280 TEUs, while exports fell 18.3% to 114,185 TEUs year over year. Empty containers rose 10% to 321,691 TEUs, port data show.  March is typically a slow month for shipping but the port has been working diligently to lower the amount of older containers from terminals and the number of ships waiting to come into the port.  “Imports are on the rise…

BC Ferries’ New Island Class Vessels Run New Routes 

BC Ferries recently welcomed new Gabriola-Nanaimo Harbour route commuters on its new Island Class vessels.  The addition of the new vessels allows BC Ferries to bolster capacity and sailing frequency to support commuters and school children leaving Gabriola, according to the transportation agency.  One vessel is scheduled to run an 18-hour service while a second vessel is to run at the busiest 12-hour time of the day, allowing for more passenger and vehicle capacity throughout the day.  Each ferry can carry 47 vehicles, is battery-equipped to become fully electric in the future and outfitted with hybrid technology. San Pedro Bay Ports’ Container Dwell Fee Still on Hold 

The Long Beach and Los Angeles seaports have moved the implementation date of the “Container Dwell Fee,” a fee that would charge ocean carriers for lingering containers, until April 22.  Leaders at both ports have delayed the fee weekly based on how well containers have been moving out of marine terminals. Initial Findings of Benicia Port Fire Investigation Announced 

A fire at the Port of Benicia that damaged part of the port pier the weekend of April 9, may have started “on or near the lower portion of the coke conveyor belt system near the base of the silos,” according to initial findings announced April 12 by Benicia Fire Chief Josh Chadwick.  The fire, which mushroomed into a four-alarm blaze, started at the base of the petroleum coke silo and apparently spread under the pier Saturday. Last month, the Port of Los Angeles scored its third straight month of record cargo, wrapping up its best first quarter in history by 3.5%, according to new data released Tuesday.  The nation’s busiest seaport moved 958,674 TEUs in March, the port’s third best month ever.  The port handled 495,196 TEUs in imports in March, a 1% uptick year over year, while it moved 9% fewer loaded exports from March 2021 with 11,781 TEUs.  Meanwhile, empty containers rose 2% from March 2021 with 351,697 TEUs.  In the first quarter of 2022, the port moved more than 2.68 million TEUs, a…

The Port of Benicia, a small, privately operated port in the San Francisco Bay area, was devastated by a four-alarm fire this past weekend. The port, which is operated by Amports, a Maryland-based auto processing company, saw the blaze erupt in the early afternoon of Saturday, April 9, according to media reports, in the 1000 block of Bayshore Boulevard, next to the Amports port terminal.
