Evergreen Orders Con-Green Boxships

Taiwan’s Evergreen Marine Corporation has ordered a series of four 172-meter by 27.4-meter Con-green container ships from South Korea’s Hyundai Mipo Dockyard for delivery starting in 2021. The 1,800 TEU capacity vessels have been developed by Hyundai in conjunction with MAN Energy Solutions and classification society DNV GL to maximize vessel operational efficiency and meet Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) Phase 3 requirements which start in 2025.

BC Ferries Orders Another Salish-Class

After receiving its first two hybrid-electric ferries in January from the Damen yard in Romania (see Pacific Maritime Magazine, Feb 2020) BC Ferries expects to receive its fourth Salish-class LNG-fueled ferry from Poland’s Remontowa yard in 2022. The mid-size vessel, which will be able to carry at least 138 vehicles and up to 600 passengers and crew, will replace the 1965-built Mayne Queen which is limited to 58 vehicles and 400 passengers and crew.

LPG Tankers Being Converted to Burn LPG as Fuel

Singapore-headquartered BW LPG, part of the BW Group, has exercised an option with South Korea’s STX Heavy Industries covering the retrofit of four more of its Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs) to a dual-fuel configuration. This will allow them to burn a portion of their LPG cargos as fuel. Exercise of the option follows Type Approval Testing of a prototype engine and system by STX that exceeded expectations. French Companies Join in Development of Sailing Freighter

The French Sogestran group has decided to invest in Neoline’s project to develop a transatlantic sailing freighter through its subsidiary, Compagnie Maritime Nantaise – MN. Sogestran will assist Neoline in financing its first ships and setting up a company to operate them. The 446-foot sailing cargo ships will use sails as their main propulsion, with an expected commercial speed of 11 knots, using trained crews and advanced meteorological routing technology.
