The Hawaii Department of Transportation is seeking bids from companies that can remove a 145-year-old inoperable vessel from the Honolulu Harbor, the transportation department announced July 25.
Currently berthed at Pier 7, the Falls of Clyde previously served as a museum vessel at the Hawai‘i Maritime Center. The 280-foot steel-mast sailing vessel, which was privately owned until it was impounded in 2016, was removed from the Hawai‘i Register of Historic Places because of the ship’s condition.
The ship is now in the department’s custody.
“While the selected contractor will determine the method of removal, HDOT evaluated removal by dismantling, ocean disposal, or third-party acquisition in its Final Environmental Assessment issued (in June),” according to the department, which is also looking to “address and satisfy other regulatory requirements associated with this action including state and federal laws on historic preservation.”
Companies interested in the removal work must submit their bids by Sept. 25.
