Ireland-based equipment manufacturer Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd. has secured a contract supply TraPac Oakland with two ship-to-shore (STS) cranes, marking Liebherr’s first STS cranes to enter the U.S. West Coast market.

Liebherr announced Dec. 11 that it expects to supply the Northern California terminal operator with a pair of cranes, each with a 216-foot outreach, a 173.83-foot lift height, 100-foot span and a 66-long-tonnes lifting capacity in twin-lift mode.

Shane Kuhlmey, the divisional director at Liebherr U.S. Co., called TraPac’s investment in Liebherr cranes a major milestone for the company.

“This first-ever STS sale on the West Coast underscores … Liebherr’s ability to support customers in this region,” Kuhlmey said. “With established service and support capabilities already in place, we are uniquely positioned to meet the needs of TraPac and other port operators as they modernize and expand.”

TraPac, which has been operating at the Port of Oakland since 1991, is one of the seaport’s busiest terminals. In 2019, it wrapped up a two-year, $67 million expansion that almost doubled its footprint from 66 to 123 acres and added a third 1,400-foot-long dock to accommodate megaships, according to the port.
