Despite the near complete shutdown of the cruise industry new start-up venture Amundsen Expeditions has contracted Finland’s Wärtsilä to design a new series of six luxury expedition-type cruise ships for operation in polar and tropical climates, all to be specifically customized for the Chinese market.
To be capable of carrying 200 passengers each, the new vessels will be fitted with a complete package of Wärtsilä products, including Wärtsilä 32 engines, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) units, electric propulsion, and Wärtsilä Nacos Platinum bridge systems for navigation and communication.
Although a builder for the vessels has yet to be contracted it can be noted that the design contract was finalized just a few weeks before the outbreak of Covid-19 in China.
