The Oregon International Port of Coos Bay has been awarded a $25 million grant by the U.S. Department of Transportation for the port’s Pacific Coast Intermodal Port Project, it was announced Oct. 17.
The funding, which came from the federal agency’s INFRA (Infrastructure for Rebuilding America) program, would pay for the project’s environmental compliance and permitting, design and engineering work and allow the port to advance infrastructure plans, according to the port.
The project seeks to reduce congestion and improve cargo movement. Components include upgrades to the Coos Bay Rail Line, the construction of a completely electrified ship-to-rail facility and the deepening of a navigational channel.
Port of Coos Bay Executive Director Melissa Cribbins called the INFRA grant “a game changer” for the port and the Pacific Coast Intermodal Port Project.
“This federal grant is a watershed moment for the region and adds the federal government to the growing list of critical supporters for one of the impactful rural economic development projects in state history,” Cribbins said.
