The Port of Hueneme and the Port of Paita in Peru are now sister ports.

The two seaports announced Nov. 14 that they’ve signed a Memorandum of Understanding  creating a sister port relationship that allows them to nurture trade and highlight economic development at both ports and regions.

They also intend to share information about bolstering procurement transparency, partnering on ways to make port development more sustainable and other areas of focus, according to the announcement.

“This agreement with the Port of Paita is more than just a partnership; it’s a bridge between our communities that will foster innovation, sustainability and economic growth,” Port of Hueneme Board of Harbor Commissioners President Celina Zacarias said. “We are thrilled to embark on this journey of shared knowledge and mutual advancement.”

Situated on Peru’s northern coast in the Piura Region, the Port of Paita is a major gateway between Peru and South America and global markets, especially when it comes to moving agricultural and seafood exports.

In northern Peru, Terminales Portuarios Euroandinos (TPE) stands out as the main port for agro-exports and is the potential gateway for importing products, TPE CEO Eduardo Cerdeira said.

“This characteristic makes it a strategic port on the West Coast of South America,” Cerdeira said. “I have no doubt that the signing of this MoU to establish a sister port relationship between the Port of Hueneme and the Port of Paita will bring mutual benefits in terms of development as green ports (and) commercial strategies, as well as safety and security.”
