The Port of Long Beach is encouraging public and private groups to pitch projects related to solar power generation or solar water heating for facilities that serve children, seniors and those with chronic illnesses.

The port plans to fund these types of projects through its Community Grants Program, which was established as a way of investing in projects that help curb the impact to communities most affected by operations at the port.

Since 2009 through a previous program, the port has budgeted more than $65 million for these community projects. So far, the port said, it has committed $33.1 million toward that effort.

Applicants have until 4 p.m. on Nov. 9 to turn in their concepts in writing.

More about the project guidelines is available at www.polb.com/grantopportunities.

The program has dedicated funding in categories such as community health, community infrastructure and facility improvements. More information is available at www.polb.com/grants.
