Site preparation work is set to begin on land planned for the Ridley Energy Export Facility (REEF) project, previously called the Vopak Pacific Canada project, the Prince Rupert Port Authority announced Dec. 5.
The port authority has approved the removal of vegetation as part of the first phase of development. The REEF project is being developed jointly by AltaGas and Royal Vopak, which intend to build and run a liquefied petroleum gas and bulk liquids terminal and marine berthing and loading facility at the British Columbia seaport.
The project secured from the Canadian government key determinations and permits in 2022.
The removal work is expected to happen on a 190-acre site leased to the joint venture by the port authority.
“Vopak and AltaGas have indicated they are continuing to make strong advancements across critical workstreams required to reach a positive Final Investment Decision, which is expected in the first half of 2024,” the port authority said in a statement. “The project will provide much needed tidewater access to global markets for Canadian energy and liquid bulk exports.”
