Prince Rupert Port Authority Partnering on Import Logistics Park Development

The Prince Rupert Port Authority is teaming up with the Metlakatla Development Corp. on the development of a logistics park that could mean job opportunities for Indigenous people and more intermodal trade through Prince Rupert, British Columbia.

The port authority on Jan. 30 announced its partnership with Metlakatla on the more than $100 million South Kaien Import Logistics Park, part of which is expected to include a logistics and warehousing complex for import transloading and related activities at the port.

The Metlakatla Development Corp. is the business arm of the Metlakatla First Nation native tribe.

SSA Marine subsidiary IntermodeX, which was named the anchor tenant of the logistics park development, plans to build logistics and warehousing facilities on 33 acres, with operations set to begin in early 2027.

“This valued partnership with Metlakatla Development Corporation reinforces our commitment to creating sustainable business opportunities that generate employment, economic, and social benefits … while also strengthening import transloading and logistics capabilities, bringing greater flexibility, agility, and resilience to shipper supply chains at the Port of Prince Rupert,” Port Authority President and CEO Shaun Stevenson said.
