Port of Redwood City Executive Director Kristine A. Zortman is the new president of the California Association of Port Authorities (CAPA), the organization announced Nov. 7. Zortman, who previously served as CAPA’s vice president, said she was honored to be elected president of the association, which consists of 11 major California port authorities that account for processing 38% of the nation’s container imports and 28% of its exports. Study: California Ports a Major Economic Generator for U.S.

Ports in California account for billions in tax revenue and millions of jobs in the United States, according to a new study prepared by Washington-based consulting firm BST Associates. The study was first shared with state lawmakers in February for Ports Day 2023, a yearly day of advocacy for the California Association of Port Authorities (CAPA). According to the study, California ports generated $416 billion in trade value in 2020, $38.1 billion in tax revenue, and an estimated 3.1 million jobs, including over 800,000 export-related jobs and close to 2.3 million import-related jobs. West Coast Port Projects Net Major MARAD Funding

Various port infrastructure projects along the U.S. West Coast have received a significant financial boost from the Maritime Administration. MARAD announced Oct. 28 that projects in California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska and Hawaii were among the recipients of the administration’s Port Infrastructure Development Program. The $703 million, which comes from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Congressional appropriations, funds a total of 41 projects in 22 states, with major amounts including $47.3 million for the Kapalama Container Terminal Project in Honolulu and $24.3 million for the Terminal 6 Infrastructure Improvements Project in Portland, Oregon.
