New Young Brothers Barges to Enter Service in December

Hawaii-based inter-island freight company Young Brothers’ first new barges in nearly two decades are expected to enter service in December, the company said Oct. 3. The announcement follows the recent christening of the barges -- named Kalohi and Nāulu -- which are part of a more than $45 million investment by the company to bolster its inter-island shipping service efficiency, capacity and reliability. The barges were custom-designed by Washington-based naval architecture firm Hockema Group and constructed in Louisiana by Conrad Shipyard. Hawaii Transportation Dept. Seeks Bids for Removing 145-Year-Old Vessel

The Hawaii Department of Transportation is seeking bids from companies that can remove a 145-year-old inoperable vessel from the Honolulu Harbor, the transportation department announced July 25. Currently berthed at Pier 7, the Falls of Clyde previously served as a museum vessel at the Hawai‘i Maritime Center. The 280-foot steel-mast sailing vessel, which was privately owned until it was impounded in 2016, was removed from the Hawai‘i Register of Historic Places because of the ship’s condition. Pasha Hawaii joined Port of Oakland officials in christening the m/v Janet Marie, Pasha’s new 774-foot “Ohana Class” liquified natural gas container vessel, the port announced Aug. 9. The second of two “Ohana Class” LNG vessels commissioned by Pasha Hawaii, the new Jones Act ship exceeds year 2030 emission standards for ocean vessels set by the International Maritime Organization. The Honolulu-based company said Aug. 10 that it’s prioritizing emergency equipment and supply shipments to the area, chartering an extra barge for stand-by emergencies.
