Construction has officially started on the first of a trio of new Matson, Inc. containerships that are expected to operate its Hawaii and China-Long Beach Express (CLX) services, the Honolulu-based transportation services company said Sept. 30. Officials marked the occasion at the Philly Shipyard in Pennsylvania, where the Jones Act-compliant vessels are being built under a $1 billion investment by Matson. SSA, Matson Unveil New Fleet of Electric Yard Tractors at Long Beach Port

SSA Terminals, an SSA Marine and Matson Navigation Co. joint venture, has introduced 33 new battery-electric yard tractors at the Port of Long Beach, the biggest deployment of its type on the West Coast, the port announced Nov. 30. The new tractors, which replaced older versions that ran on gas and diesel, were funded in part by $50 million from the California Air Resources Board for the Sustainable Terminals Accelerating Regional Transformation. Matson Assists in Maui Wildfire Crisis

Matson Inc. is moving to help emergency agencies responding to the Maui wildfire that has so far killed nearly 100 people. The Honolulu-based company said Aug. 10 that it’s prioritizing emergency equipment and supply shipments to the area, chartering an extra barge for stand-by emergencies. This past weekend, Matson’s barge Columbia carried supplies from Honolulu to Maui for the Federal Emergency Management Administration and the Hawaii Food Industry Association. Three more Matson Inc. containerships are expected to be built within the next five years, after the Honolulu-based shipping company announced Nov. 2 that its subsidiary, Matson Navigation has inked agreements with Philly Shipyard Inc. for construction of a trio of 3,600-TEU Aloha Class container vessels for ships for about $1 billion.  Philly Shipyard is East Coast builder that constructed Matson’s two other 854-foot Aloha Class vessels, which came into service in 2018 and 2019. In its new 2021 Sustainability Report, Honolulu-based marine cargo carrier Matson, Inc. detailed its strides to invest and practice in a more environmentally mindful way while serving its communities, customers and employees. The July 25 report also includes Matson’s “strategic approach and how it measures progress and celebrates key achievements,” according to the company. Matson Inc. Announces New Leadership Roles

Honolulu-based Matson has announced that five employees will take on new leadership roles within the company.  Vic Angoco, Matson’s senior vice president, Pacific, will become senior vice president, Alaska, starting on July 1. He will take over for Bal Dreyfus, who is retiring.  Angoco, who will be based in Anchorage, currently oversees the company’s Hawaii, Guam, Micronesia and South Pacific operations and brings 32 years of maritime experience.
