U.S. Coast Guard officials with the National Maritime Center (NMC) are providing duplicate merchant mariner credentials at no charge to mariners whose credentials were lost or destroyed during the recent wildfires in Hawaii. Affected mariners are asked to provide a statement of loss to NMC via fax at (304) 433-3412 or email the statement to IASKNMC@uscg.mil. The statement should include the mariner’s full name, date of birth, current mailing address, current phone number and/or email address, and the mariner’s reference number or if that is unknown the last four digits of the mariner’s social security number. Delays Continue in Merchant Mariner Credentials Issuance

A massive influx of applications and technical issues with credential producing equipment at the National Maritime Center continue to delay when merchant mariner credentials are being issued, the NMC said April 25. “The Coast Guard is working as quickly as possible to resolve these issues and we do not want these delays to burden the mariner’s ability to use their MMC (merchant mariner credentials),” the center said, adding that these issues don’t impact mariner medical certificates or endorsements processing. Those who applied for merchant mariner credentials may have to wait a little longer to receive them. The National Maritime Center is delayed in issuing credentials because of heightened application volumes and ongoing technical issues with its credential production equipment, Maritime Center commanding officer Capt. Bradley W. It could take as many as 21 days for mariners to receive their completed credentials through the mail from the National Maritime Center, and without being able to track them, credentials could be lost or returned. In a March 20 announcement, the National Maritime Center reminded mariners of ways to lower the risk of lost credentials. One is to check the mariner’s address for accuracy and legibility. National Maritime Center Now Accepting Electronically Signed Documents

In an effort to improve services for mariners, the National Maritime Center can now accept electronic signatures on CG-719 series forms and all supporting documentation for merchant mariner credentials, medical certificates and course approvals, the NMC announced Jan. 23. Mariner applicants may use software-generated electronic signatures such as Microsoft Word, and Adobe Acrobat on CG-719 forms and other supporting materials including, “but not limited to, sea service, assessments, mariner training documentation and qualified assessor and designated examiner requests,” according to the NMC. “E-mailing your application and e-signing your documents is the preferred method for submission,” according to NMC.  However, any…
