U.S. West Coast Ports Secure Infrastructure Funding

More than a dozen port projects in Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington are expected to receive a portion of $653 million in Port Infrastructure Development Program funding announced Nov. 3 by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD). PMSA: July Container Dwell Time Stable at LA, Long Beach Ports

The amount of cargo lingering at the Los Angeles and Long Beach seaports has remained steady over the last couple of months, according to data released Aug. 23 by the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association. The average time that a shipping container dwelled at the ports before leaving by truck was 3.2 days in July, slightly up from the 2.9-day average in June but nowhere near the 5.62 day-average from July 2022. “An approximate 3-day average is within the normal range and is an indicator that the supply chain is operating smoothly,” PMSA said. Port of Coos Bay, Developer to Pursue Grant for Pacific Coast Intermodal Port Project

The Oregon International Port of Coos Bay and NorthPoint Development plan to pursue a major grant proposal to help fund the Pacific Coast Intermodal Port Project, the port announced Aug. 21. The State of Oregon has already committed $60 million toward the three-part project, which involves deepening and broadening the Coos Bay Federal Navigation Channel, upgrading the Coos Bay Rail Line system-wide and building a maritime terminal on port property the North Spit. Ports in California account for billions in tax revenue and millions of jobs in the United States, according to a new study prepared by Washington-based consulting firm BST Associates. The study was first shared with state lawmakers in February for Ports Day 2023, a yearly day of advocacy for the California Association of Port Authorities (CAPA).
