Port of Mobile, Alabama has completed its most recent container terminal expansion project by inaugurating a 400-foot extension to the APM-managed facility that can now berth two large ships simultaneously. The berth extension, part of a $50 million modernization project at the 10-year old terminal, enables two ships in the 8,000-TEU to 10,000-TEU capacity range to be safely handled along 2,100-foot of dock, an operation that occurred later in the month when both the 1,096-foot Belita and 856-foot Cosco Santos were accommodated.
The extended berth is equipped with two super post-Panamax and two post-Panamax ship-to-shore gantry cranes and has been fitted with a new fender system and additional moorage fittings.
