Wilmington Completes Turning Basin Expansion

North Carolina’s Port of Wilmington

The North Carolina State Ports Authority (NCSPA) has completed the second phase of its turning basin expansion project at the Port of Wilmington to allow the movement of ships of up to 1,200 feet in length. The multi-million dollar project widened the Cape Fear River turning basin from 1,400 feet to 1,524 feet, with the additional 124 feet allowing container ships of up to 14,000-TEU capacity to be safely turned.

Completion of the project follows the opening of 2,600 feet of berthing space at the port that allows two mega container ships to be handled simultaneously and expands the port’s annual throughput capacity to 1.2 million TEUs.
