A Filipino man who fatally stabbed a fellow crewmember on a container ship en route from Shanghai to Los Angeles was sentenced to 240 months in federal prison on Nov. 7. Michael Dequito Monegro, 44, a resident of the Philippines, was sentenced by United States District Judge Dale S. Fischer, who said in court at the Los Angeles hearing that Monegro’s conduct was “unusually heinous, cruel and brutal.” Monegro pleaded guilty on May 2 to one count of committing an act of violence against a person onboard a ship that is likely to endanger the safe navigation of the ship.…

The Port of Oakland revealed on Sept. 26 that it’s joining forces with the West Oakland Job Resource Center (WOJRC) to train workers for green jobs in the transportation and logistics industry. A commercial fishing vessel that sank near Washington’s San Juan Island on Aug. 13 with estimated 2,600 gallons of diesel and oil on board was successfully lifted to the surface as part of a lengthy process that ended Sept. 17.
