I wanted to take a moment to let you know about some upcoming changes coming to the print and online editions of Pacific Maritime.
First, the big news is that PacMar is switching to a bimonthly printing schedule in 2023. This means that the next issue of the magazine will be cover dated January/February, rather than just January.
The plan is to publish six issues in 2023—one every other month—plus an annual in late summer/early fall that focuses on port facilities, repair facilities, shipyards, intermodal yards and related maritime entities.
The reduction in the number of issues was driven by discussions with our advertising partners who are being impacted by economic events. The reduced production schedule allows them to fully participate in the production of the magazine while providing advertising budget savings for 2023.
But despite the reduced frequency in the number of print issues, we still plan to pack as much news and information as we can into each edition of the magazine. In fact, planned for next month’s issue are feature stories on advancements in ocean and coastal towing and a regional update focusing on Pacific Northwest ports.
Although the number of issues you’ll receive is changing in 2023, the quality and amount of information that you receive is not. This is my pledge to you.
And that brings us to the second change. Starting the first week of January, the Pacific Maritime Online newsletter will go from being sent out each Tuesday and Friday to a Tuesday only schedule.
Among the reasons for this is to more closely align the digital newsletter with those of our sister publications, Professional Mariner and Fishermen’s News, which each generate newsletters once a week. (Another of our sister publications, Ocean Navigator, has a monthly newsletter, FYI.)
With the PacMar Online newsletter becoming a weekly, each edition will contain five stories, rather than four under the current system. So in other words, each Tuesday, subscribers to the newsletter—which is free, by the way—will receive links to five news stories of importance to the maritime industry.
Along with the change in frequency will come a change in time—each edition of the newsletter will be sent out at 10:15 am starting the first week of January, as opposed to the current time of 11 am.
I know that change can be difficult for some, particularly those who appreciate steadiness and consistency. But I, and Maritime Publishing as an entity, believe that these changes help more closely align readership and advertising demand without terribly inconveniencing our loyal readership and advertisers, who are paramount to our success as a publication and as a company.
