Gulf Island Fabrication at Houma, Louisiana has been awarded a contract for the construction of two additional Navajo-class towing, salvage and rescue ships (T-ATS) for the US Navy.
The contract represents the Navy’s execution of its fourth and fifth options for the yard’s construction of five T-ATS vessels, with options for three additional vessels still remaining.
The 263-foot by 59-foot Navajo-class will have 6,000 square feet of deck space and will be able carry a load of 1,796 tons. They will replace the Navy’s three T-ATF 166 and two T-ARS 50 class vessels, which are reaching the end of their service lives.
