The Port of Olympia is expected to host a town hall on March 27 to introduce new Executive Director Alex Smith to the community.

The event gives Smith a chance to meet residents, share her vision for the port’s future and field questions from constituents.

“We encourage residents, business owners, stakeholders and anyone interested in the port’s activities to join us in person for this engaging event,” port spokesperson Taber Lee said. “It’s an excellent opportunity to get to know Alex and gain a deeper understanding of her vision and priorities.”

The Port of Olympia Commission selected Smith in February to lead the Washington seaport after reviewing more than 30 candidates. Smith previously was as the port’s environmental programs director before working for the Washington Department of Natural Resources.

In a statement, the port praised Smith’s “forward-thinking approach” and “her commitment to sustainability and fostering economic development.”

Smith succeeds former Executive Director Sam Gibboney, who separated with the port in September after serving in the top job since 2018.

“I look forward to collaborating with the dedicated staff, commissioners, and stakeholders to enhance the port’s operations and economic development, while also prioritizing environmental stewardship and community engagement,” Smith said Feb. 13. “Together, we will work towards the port’s continued success and contribute to the economic vitality of our region.”

The town hall is scheduled from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. March 27 at Percival Plaza – Olympics Room, 626 Columbia Street NW, Suite 1B Olympia, WA 98501.
