BOEM Finalizes Protections for Marine Archaeological Resources

New regulations finalized by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management on Aug. 30 aim to better protect shipwrecks and other cultural resources on the seabed from adverse impacts of offshore oil and gas activities. Under the final rule, which is effective Oct. 3, lessees and operators are required to submit an archaeological report along with any exploration or development plan for proposed activities on the U.S. Continental Shelf (OCS). The report must detail procedures for reporting discovery of possible archaeological resources and how operations would avoid or minimize harm if archaeological resources are present. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s wind energy auction for five leases off the California coast yielded “competitive high bids totaling $757.1 million from five companies,” the Department of the Interior announced Dec. 7. May 16 is the last day for the public to weigh in on the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s draft environmental assessment focusing on the Morro Bay Wind Energy Area, which is being looked at as a possible area for offshore wind energy development projects. BOEM Seeks Input on Draft Wind Energy Area Assessment

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management is seeking public input on a draft environmental assessment regarding an area near Morro Bay, California under consideration for offshore wind development.  The draft released this week by the Bureau delves into the possible effects of future commercial leasing and other “site characterization and assessment activities” within the area, which is about 20 miles off the central California coast and encompasses about 240,898 acres or 376 square miles.
