U.S. Coast Guard members teamed up with state and regional agencies to help communities impacted in the aftermath of a historic storm that recently ravaged Alaska’s western coast.

Coast Guard Sector Anchorage was sent to communities to survey port conditions and examine fuel storage facilities. In the coming days, more personnel are expected to visit the area to quickly recover local marine transportation systems, which would allow barges to access communities and offer fuel and supplies, the USCG said.

Crew members of Air Station Kodiak C-130 Hercules also performed an aerial assessment of the affected area.

“Our top priorities are to ensure the safety of the public and our responders as well as protect the environment from any potential pollution incidents resulting from the storm,” Capt. Leanne Lusk, commander of Coast Guard Sector Anchorage, said.
