The Los Angeles Port Police Criminal Investigation Section and the L.A. Police Department Commercial Crimes Unit have arrested a suspect linked to the theft of chassis that had been in service at the Port of L.A., it was announced Feb. 7.
The suspect was taken into custody during an investigation that pointed officers to a Gardena, Calif. facility holding 24 suspected stolen chassis valued at $600,000.
During the months-long investigation, law enforcement officials determined that suspects would go to marine terminals, take chassis reserved for drayage truck drivers, alter them to make them look new and then resell them for millions in profit.
“The Port of Los Angeles (is) the busiest port in the United States so stopping this theft was important for everyone involved,” L.A. Port Police Lieutenant Rosario Ferrara said. “Our investigation into these activities continues to evolve, but we hope this arrest sends a message to other criminals targeting the port complex.”
