Ana “Annie” Oryall, welder and shipfitter with Marine Group Boat Works, has been honored by the California Manufacturers & Technical Association with the association’s Emerging Leader Award, San Diego-based MGBW announced March 4.

The award, given March 5 in Sacramento, spotlights females in manufacturing who showcase “strong leadership potential and inspire others through their dedicated work,” according to Marine Group.

Oryall, who is one of six women in the company’s structural team of 71 welders, has been involved in building and refitting more than two dozen naval steel and aluminum workboats, dive boats and training vessels, as well as a number of San Francisco ferries and other commercial vessels, according to the company. She also serves as a mentor to new welders.

“Not only was she the first female welder on our team, but her positive attitude, fine craftsmanship and work ethic truly set her apart. She’s a great example for everyone at Marine Group,” Marine Group President Todd Roberts said.

Oryall said that having a positive attitude is key to having a successful project.

“When you start building a boat with a negative attitude, you’re already off to a bad start,” she said. “The vibe must be right. Being involved in creating something, helping your teammates, the comradery you get, all that builds up to a rush of emotions. And once you reach that peak, step back and see your baby, it’s a feeling you never forget.”
