The US Navy is honoring the City of Oakland, California with its latest Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), which is to be commissioned as USS Oakland (LCS 24) later this year following the conclusion of successful acceptance trials in the Gulf of Mexico. It is the 12th Independence-variant LCS to join the Navy’s fleet and the third naval ship to bear the city’s name. Following commissioning it will be homeported at San Diego, California.
