Port of Oakland Sees Cargo Numbers Drop

Port of Oakland Sees Cargo Numbers Drop

Fewer cargo vessels visited the Port of Oakland last month, resulting in a 20% drop in overall cargo in October compared with the same month last year, according to new data released by the port Monday. Imports fell 14%, while exports dropped 27% when compared to the same time a year ago, the data show. Last month, 43% fewer vessels came to the Northern California seaport than in October 2020 because some ocean carriers chose to send vessels straight to Asia instead of stopping at Oakland after “crippling delays at Southern California ports,” according to a statement released by the…

Long Beach Port to Give Pier B On-Dock Rail Project Update

Port of Long Beach officials plan to update the public on the port’s Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility project via a virtual community meeting at 10 a.m. on Dec. 1. As the cornerstone of the port’s $1 billion rail capital improvement program, the facility would help the port move more of its cargo directly from terminals to trains instead of trucks. “Moving cargo by on-dock rail is cleaner and more efficient, as it reduces truck traffic,” the port said in a statement. “No cargo trucks would visit the facility.” Rather than having drayage trucks come to the facility, smaller…

Flooding Disrupts Rail, Truck Movement at Canada’s Port of Vancouver

Rail and truck movement remained stymied at Port of Vancouver in British Columbia on Thursday in the aftermath of severe rain and flooding throughout Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley. Earlier this week, British Columbia’s Pacific region was besieged by two days of torrential downpours that have resulted in at least one woman dead, thousands of people displaced, cargo and business disrupted and thousands of dollars in massive damage. The port’s marine terminals remain open through the disruption, but washouts and landslides have shut down Canadian Pacific Rail and Canadian National Railway’s main rail corridors between Vancouver and Kamloops, according to…
