Long Beach Port Offering Free Charging for Heavy-Duty Electric Trucks

Heavy-duty electric truck drivers operating in the Port of Long Beach can now charge their trucks for free, thanks to the opening of two public charging stations at the port. The port announced Nov. 18 that it has collaborated with EV Connect to install the stations at the Clean Truck Program Terminal Access Center at 1265 Harbor Ave.  Heavy-duty electric trucks can use the charging station for up to two hours as long as they have paid their annual truck fees and are authorized to operate within the port. Good news for ocean carriers: officials at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have again moved the start date to collect on a fee attached to imports lingering at terminals past their allotted time. Slowing consumer demand and a growing number of imports shifting to Gulf and East Coast seaports affected the number of containers coming through the Port of Long Beach last month, the port said Nov. 10. About 658,428 TEUs moved through Long Beach in October, a 16.6% drop from the same time last year, with imports falling 23.7% to 293,924 TEUs and exports dipping 2% to 119,763 TEUs year over year. The Port of Long Beach is seeking concept proposals for projects that generate solar power and wants to fund winning proposals through its Community Grants Program. Most of the West Coast seaports tracked by the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association showed imports in August decline from the same time a year ago, according to the organization’s latest West Coast Trade Report, which was released Oct. 25. The Port of Long Beach saw its cargo numbers dip last month, a result of concerns about inflation, slowing consumer demand and other factors, according to new data released by the port Oct. 18. The Southern California seaport processed 741,823 TEUs in September, a 0.9% dip from September 2021. Imports fell 7.4% to 342,671 TEUs last month. Meanwhile, exports inched up 1.9% to 112,940 TEUs from the same time a year ago. The Port of Long Beach on Oct. 6 revealed that it has joined the Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems, or ARCHES, a public-private partnership that could help one of the busiest seaports in the nation get more funding toward becoming a zero-emissions gateway. The Los Angeles and Long Beach seaports experienced unprecedented spikes in air emissions in 2021, according to newly released air emissions inventories released by the ports Oct. 6. Both seaports attributed the emissions increase to supply chain bottlenecks brought on by pandemic-driven cargo volumes, resulting in cargo ships waiting at anchor.
