Despite positive cargo numbers at the Oakland, San Diego and Hueneme seaports, imports at U.S. West Coast seaports in October fell 22.7% year-over-year, and by 15% at the Canadian ports of Vancouver and Prince Rupert in British Columbia, according to the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association’s latest West Coast Report, released Dec. 21. “October was pretty much a dreadful month for container import traffic through Pacific Coast ports,” according to the report. Cargo Dwell Times Down at LA, Long Beach Ports: PMSA

The length of time that cargo containers were dwelling at the Los Angeles and Long Beach seaports in November declined month-over-month, according to data released Dec. 19 by the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association. The average time containers lingered on marine terminals at both ports was 2.8 days, a drop from 3.5 days the previous month. In September, more imported containers went through the Port of New York and New Jersey than any other U.S. port, including the Port of Los Angeles, according to November edition of the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association’s West Coast Trade Report. Most of the West Coast seaports tracked by the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association showed imports in August decline from the same time a year ago, according to the organization’s latest West Coast Trade Report, which was released Oct. 25. The Port of Los Angeles posted a 16.9% drop from 485,672 TEUs in August 2021 to 403,602 TEUs in August 2022, while the Port of Long Beach showed a 5.6% dip from 407,426 TEUs in August 2021 to 384,530 TEUs in August 2022. The average amount of time a cargo container remains at Los Angeles and Long Beach terminals before it leaves by rail or by truck remains high, according to new data released Sept. 20 by the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association. The average container dwell time in August was a “record high for rail-bound cargo,” at 16.5 days. That’s a slight uptick from the average of 16.4 days in July, according to PMSA data. The number of imports moving between the U.S. West Coast seaports and Asia continued to drop in June, while Asia-bound exports saw a year-over-year uptick for some, according to the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association’s latest West Coast Trade Report released Monday, Aug. 22. Officials at the Los Angeles and Long Beach seaports have decided to again move the start date of their Container Dwell Fee, this time to July 29. The officials again agreed to delay a fee that would charge ocean carriers for imports staying at terminals past their allotted time after seeing a combined 26% drop in lingering cargo since Oct. 25. Officials said that they plan to continue monitoring dwell times over the week.
